Melissa Whitaker is an Integrative Functional Nurse Practitioner with over 22yrs of experience in healthcare. Melissa specializes in providing patient-centered, holistic care with a focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues, using an integrative approach to healthcare.
Her interest in rehab medicine began as a patient, when she injured her spine as a rower at the University of Michigan. Physical therapy allowed her the chance to row again and win the 1996 national championship. She tried out for the Olympic team, and rowed in the Henley Regatta in England.
She has been passionate about regenerative medicine since graduating from the University of Maryland as a Nurse Practitioner. She has completed training in multiple areas from the Institute for Functional Medicine and the Functional Medicine University. Her focus is to help the body restore its natural healing ability and to optimize health.
She lives with her husband and son in Catonsville, MD. She enjoys swimming, hiking, reading, traveling, playing piano, and singing.
Functional medicine is the practice of medicine which uncovers the root causes of chronic disease and inflammation. It is an individualized approach to facilitating healing. Each of us has different genetics, exposures, stressors, experiences and lifestyles. When the body is supported in addressing deficiencies and eliminating toxicities while optimizing oxygen use, the body improves its function, and begin to heal on its own.
Functional medicine can address complex health issues such as metabolic and endocrine dysfunction, auto-immune disorders, GI dysfunction, nervous system complaints, mood disorders, skin issues, chronic infections/biotoxin illness, and others. Advanced testing methods assess and monitor progress in treating the root causes of modern inflammatory disease.
The use of ozone in medicine has been well studied since the early 1900’s. It has long been used as a powerful healing modality for pain, cardiovascular disease, auto-immune conditions, metabolic health, aging, and chronic infections. It maximizes cellular function to optimize oxygen use and slow down mitochondrial decay.
Trigger points are painful areas of the body and can include muscles, connective tissue, nerve sheaths, or joints. Trigger points are injected with an anti-inflammatory mixture of lidocaine, vitamins and plant derivatives in order to decrease pain by reducing adhesions and scar tissue, and to facilitate healing.
Trigger point injections provide excellent relief in a variety of areas, such as the neck, upper back, low back, joints, extremities (plantar fasciitis or trigger finger), and for headaches or migraines.
We use bio-identical hormone replacement as implanted pellets, creams or injections. As we age, our natural production of sex hormones decreases. BHRT can greatly improve sexual function, muscle mass, metabolism, cardiovascular outcomes, libido, sleep, brain fog, fatigue, and pain.
